Anna V. Eskamani Launches Campaign for Florida House District 47

Women’s rights advocate and progressive champion declares candidacy to win seat back for Democrats

Tallahassee, FL – Orlando native Anna V. Eskamani has officially filed to run for Florida House District 47, which includes parts of Orlando, Belle Isle, and Winter Park.

“As an Orlando Native and daughter of immigrant parents I have worked relentlessly to protect all Floridians through effective advocacy, bold leadership, and strategic management. Growing up in Orlando and attending Orange County Public Schools means that I understand our region’s growth, changes, challenges, and potential. As a community organizer, I have a proven track record of building consensus while fighting unapologetically for progressive values that will make life better for everyone. As a tough, authentic, and unabashed Democrat, I will work hard to delivers results and gets things done for the people of House District 47 and for Floridians across our great state.”

Anna Eskamani is no stranger to public service. She currently serves as the Senior Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida* where she oversees programming across 22 counties and is known in the legislature and across the nation as an advocate for women’s health and equality. Eskamani is also a PhD student in Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida and serves as an Adjunct Professor teaching Intro to Women’s Studies. She serves on numerous boards for well established nonprofits, and is currently developing a new course for UCF on community organizing for nonprofit professionals.

House District 47 encompasses Orlando, Winter Park, and Belle Isle. Pulse Nightclub is also within the District’s boundaries, and Eskamani is committed to honoring the lives lost and injured through real action and meaningful reform.

The campaign to win back House District 47 will prioritize six key issues: gun safety, equality, the economy and jobs, our natural resources, public and higher education, and health care access.

When asked about the importance of House District 47, Eskamani had this to add:

“House District 47 is not only an important District to me and our community, it’s an important District to Florida. A crucial Orlando-area, I-4 seat – it is a vital foothold in building towards a new majority in the Florida House. This seat can no longer swing from cycle to cycle. United and with young people at the helm, we can and will move it firmly into the Democratic column. The House is historically the people’s chamber – it’s time to take it back.”

Eskamani is widely recognized across the region for her work as a bold voice and effective leader for progressive change. Her honors include:

  • Orlando Magazine’s 50 Most Powerful People: Noted as one of the most powerful Central Floridians who are shaping Orlando, read more here (2017)
  • Orange County Democratic Executive Committee (DEC) : Awarded the Cannon Porta Award, an honor given to a dedicated woman who epitomizes the principles and values of the Democratic Party and leads by example through organizing and leading on a grassroots level in Central Florida (2017)
  • University of Central Florida’s “30 Under 30”: Recognized by the UCF Alumni Foundation as an outstanding young alumni who continue to “Reach for the Stars” in their professional and personal lives (2016)
  • Alumni Achievement Award: Recognized by UCF’s College of Health and Public Affairs as a leading alumni in the field of Nonprofit Management (2016)
  • Central Florida 100: Recognized by the Orlando Sentinel as one of Central Florida’s 100 most influential people in government, politics and culture. (2015)

House District 47 has been left open by Republican Representative Mike Miller but Eskamani has been planning to run for this seat of the past year and has quickly evolved to be the clear front runner for Democrats. When speaking to her viability as candidate, Eskamani added:

I represent the Democratic Party’s future; firm progressive values and a track record for getting things done and building bridges for all hardworking Floridians. This is about winning elections and leading real social change. The Republican led legislature — now coupled with the dangerous Trump agenda — is hurting families. It’s time for a new progressive generation to pave the way.”

If Eskamani wins, she will be the first Iranian-American to serve the Florida legislature. To learn more about Anna V. Eskamani’s campaign, sign up for our email blasts and follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
